There are so many advantages to owning a gas fireplace. Of course you don’t have the timeless authenticity and ambience of burning logs. But you also avoid the hassle and there are some inherent problems and dangers that accompany wood burning, as charming as it may be.
That’s not to say that you shouldn’t be cautious about a gas unit. It’s gas after all and if you aren’t careful and if you don’t follow instructions then it can definitely be damaging to your health and dangerous.
If you have just been involved in a gas fireplace purchase and installation then mark the front of your manual with the model and serial number for dealer and service instructions should they be required. If you have purchased a home with a gas unit already installed then look behind the louvres or behind the moveable panel for the model and serial number and record it.
If you are not certain about using your gas fireplace efficiently and safely when you use your gas fireplace for the first time consult the manual and if you can’t find a manual call the manufacturer or a service agent.
It will either be an electronic auto ignition or it will have a standing pilot. If it has a battery operated remote then install new batteries. If it’s an electronic starter simply make sure the gas is turned on and hit the switch, remote or thermostat and it will start. Pilot lights are a little more complex. The pilot should always be on but if it isn’t you will need to consult the manual to turn the pilot on. Once the pilot is running, turn the valve control located under the fireplace to “on”. Finally, turn up the thermostat and switch the unit on. You should be methodical about turning the unit on and just as methodical when the unit is turned off. Never leave the gas running.
Then you’re ready for winter. You should keep your fireplace maintained throughout the off season. You may get the occasional cold snap or winter may come early.
